Luxury cars get cheaper as makers line up models

India has become a top-rated destination for luxury car production, as it plays host to Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. All of these added a string of models to their production lines.

About two dozen luxury car lines get assembled in India of the marquee German and British brands, some of which are not produced anywhere else but in their home country.

The increased localisation has led to a reduction of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 90 lakh in their sticker price, due to lower taxes. Most of these products were brought to India as a completely built unit (CBU) from their home country, Germany or the UK, which led to doubling of their rates.

911 Turbo now even more potent

By: IOL Motoring Staff

Stuttgart – Although the 911 Turbo models are no longer the only ones in the range to have turbo power, thanks to the new Carreras being force fed, the Turbo badge still carries top dog status and that applies even more so to the refreshed versions.

Revealed on the web ahead of their debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January, the facelifted 911 Turbo and Turbo S both receive a 15kW power boost to their respective 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engines.

Thanks to modified inlet ports, new injection nozzles and higher fuel pressure the Turbo is now good for 397kW while the Turbo S gains new turbochargers with larger compressors to push 427kW.

What does this mean on the street? According to Porsche the Turbo will now run from 0-100km/h in three seconds flat and reach a top speed of 319km/h. The Turbo S runs to 100 in 2.9s and reaches 330km/h. Porsche also claims slight improvements to fuel consumption but let’s not open that can of worms.

New Mustang is torque of the town

Cape Town – Easily the most eagerly anticipated launch of the year is underway this week as Ford unleashes its pony car in South Africa after depriving us of it for decades.

The all-new muscle car that you see here has morphed into a global product and local models, available in right hand-drive for the first time, will be offered with a potent 306kW/530Nm 5-litre V8 engine that makes it the most powerful Ford ever to be sold in SA.

While we can’t picture anyone wanting a Mustang without a V8, local buyers can also opt for a more economical 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol engine, rated at a still-pretty-decent 223kW and 430Nm.

Custom Colors Are Now Available For Your Sportscar’s…Tires

Clients of Lapo Elkan’s uber-hip yacht and auto custom shop, Garage Italia Customs, will soon be some of the first drivers in the world to have tailor-made tires that are being created exclusively by Pirelli in a variety of colors.

It makes perfect sense as these two hyper-Italian companies collaborate to take customization to the extreme. Pirelli as the only supplier for Formula 1 has always been at the forefront of tire technology. And their design engineers are running with Garage Italia Customs’ idea to develop an exclusive new range of tires that would make the italian custom shop’s creations even more unique.

EXCLUSIVE: New York state to auction luxury cars seized in Medicaid scam

ALBANY – The State of New York is getting into the luxury car business courtesy of a pair of Medicaid scammers who were busted in Brooklyn.

Officials are preparing to auction off two high-priced cars – including a 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class sport utility vehicle – seized from the fraudsters and will return the proceeds to the state’s Medicaid system.

“Medicaid fraud is a fraud on all taxpayers and a particularly egregious theft from our most vulnerable New Yorkers,” Gov. Cuomo told the Daily News.

“With this action, we are sending a clear message that we will not allow anyone to profit in any way from these crimes against those in need,” Cuomo said.

The Week in Luxury Cars: The Los Angeles Auto Show, 2017 Range Rover Evoque, Lamborghini Huracán LP580-2, and More

This week’s automotive news focused largely on the Los Angeles Auto Show, taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center now through November 29.

The 2015 edition of the event—which kicks off the motor showcase season in the United States each year—is featuring roughly 50 introductions from brands including Buick, Mazda, Fiat, Jaguar, Lincoln, Cadillac, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Land Rover’s latest Evoque—the first crossover to lose its head—was among the most talked-about, with much of the buzz revolving around its unconventional physique.

“It’s interesting when automakers pull the roof off anything other than a sedan or convertible,” Stephanie Brinley wrote. “Often, however, ‘interesting’ does not translate to commercial success.”

In Hong Kong’s luxury car market, a Tesla is cheap

Hong Kong
With its narrow streets, dense population, and tiny residential spaces, Hong Kong was not built for car ownership. Yet Tesla’s distinctive Model S is doing well here. The high-end electric car is now a common sight, whether idling at traffic lights in the congested Central district, snaking up the hills to Victoria Peak, or cruising down to the beach at Shek O.
Tesla, it turns out, has been getting help from the government.
In an effort to curb pollution, Hong Kong heavily taxes newly registered vehicles—in many cases by more than 100% of the vehicle’s sticker price. Such taxes have been waived entirely for electric vehicles for the past 18 years. Earlier electric vehicles (EVs) that came to Hong Kong suffered sluggish sales for the same reasons they flopped elsewhere: a lack of charging infrastructure and generally low battery life.
